Manila, 15th March 2024: While the two countries have already inked more than 120 agreements over the decades, several new MoUs were signed on February 29, 2024. These MoUs came as a part of Philippines’ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s first official 2-day visit to Canberra.
Canberra and Manila will now be seen cooperating on the digital economy front alongside bolstering their defence against cyberattacks, as per their latest MoU on cyber and critical technology field. The Philippines is also keen on sharing a plethora of other information with Australia in terms of capacity building, norms under international law concerning cyberspace and others.
On the maritime front, the Philippines will take active steps to improve civil military cooperation and encourage international law while maintaining the right global decorum, protect the marine environment and cultural heritage, upgrade defense engagements, and develop channels for coordination between relevant agencies from both nations.
To top it all, Australia’s prime minister Anthony Albanese has disclosed that the country will be investing $20 million with an objective to aid Philippines in transforming and improving access to its justice system.
